The feeling of progression is just not good in this game. Random rubberbanding, Ai taking perfect turns at high speeds and starter cars going faster than your riced up supra. After Stage 3 the game's difficulty ramps up unfairly.
By the end of Stage 3, you have seen everything the game has to offer. Without a randomized variable like cops, the game becomes way too simple and your brain kicks into autopilot in late game and that is not fun. The racing is varied and somewhat unique until stage 3, then it just becomes second nature because the handing isn't as deep and varied enough to support a 10 hour game, let alone 20. And it doesn't help that a lot of the options are copy pasted for almost every car, and since it doesn't have features like autosclupt like in the later games, it's not deep enough. The customization is surprisingly good but it's redundant in the late game because you're forced to pick whatever gives the best rating and your options are extremely limited. The car list tonally fits perfectly and love how everything has a different shop and you can see other racers roaming around the map at all times.
The soundtrack is pretty good and mostly fits the tuner scene. Bayview is an amazing map with variety and great road layout.
The best aspect of this game is the vibe and it's setting. Installed this game with the intent to finish it, after not playing it since I was a kid.
